Staircase Remodeling
Northern Virginia.

Hardwood treads, custom railings, iron balusters, and full staircase renovations built to last throughout Arlington, Fairfax, Manassas, and Northern Virginia. Every detail matched to your home.

What we do

Staircases built with precision and care.

A staircase sits at the center of your home — it's one of the first things anyone sees, and one of the most-used structures in the house. When the treads are worn, the railing wobbles, or the whole thing just looks dated, it affects the feel of every floor. At Ventura Home Improvement, we've been renovating staircases across Northern Virginia, Arlington, Fairfax, and Manassas since 2015, and we treat every staircase project with the same attention we give kitchens and bathrooms.

The most common staircase project we handle is a full tread and riser replacement — pulling out the existing treads, squaring and shimming the stringer if needed, and installing new hardwood treads with painted or stained risers. We work with red oak, white oak, poplar, and pine, and we can match the stain exactly to your existing floors so the staircase flows naturally into the rest of the home.

Railing and baluster work is the other major component. Wobbly railings are a safety issue, not just an aesthetic one, and we address both at once. We install wood handrails, iron balusters, and newel posts, building everything to code-compliant height and spacing. Whether you want a traditional turned-baluster look or a clean modern iron spindle design, we have the materials and the skill to execute it cleanly.

For homeowners who want a full transformation, we also handle complete staircase rebuilds — new stringers, new treads, new risers, new railing system, new newel posts. We've converted carpeted stairs to hardwood, rebuilt split-level staircases, and added staircases to finished basements. Every project starts with a detailed in-home estimate so you know exactly what's happening before any demo begins.

Why choose Ventura for your staircase remodel?

Oscar personally oversees every staircase project. We don't subcontract finish carpentry — the same crew that installs your treads sets your railing and finishes your balusters.

We stain-match to your existing hardwood floors so the staircase reads as part of the home, not an afterthought. Bring us a sample or we'll pull it from the floor itself.

Every railing and baluster installation is built to IRC code for height and spacing. A staircase should be as safe as it is beautiful — we don't cut corners on either.

Staircase remodeling questions

Can you match the stain on my new treads to my existing hardwood floors?

Yes. Stain-matching is a standard part of every tread replacement we do. If you have existing hardwood floors, we pull a sample during the estimate and match the tone, sheen, and grain fill as closely as possible. We'll show you the test patch before we commit to the full staircase.

How long does a staircase remodel take?

A tread and riser replacement on a standard single-flight staircase typically takes 2–4 days — one day for demo and installation, one to two days for staining and finishing, and a final walkthrough. Full rebuilds or multi-flight staircases run longer. We give you a firm timeline in your written estimate before work begins.

Can you convert my carpeted stairs to hardwood?

Yes, carpet-to-hardwood conversions are one of our most common staircase projects. We remove the existing carpet and padding, assess the condition of the underlying treads, and either resurface them or replace them with new hardwood. The result looks like the staircase was always hardwood.

Do you handle the railing and balusters too, or just the treads?

We handle the full staircase — treads, risers, balusters, handrail, and newel posts. You can do just treads and risers if the railing is still solid, or we can replace everything at once. We'll assess the existing railing during the estimate and give you an honest recommendation.
